Reviews: Wonders Never Cease

Christy Award–winning author Downs (PlagueMaker) delivers a novel different in tone from his previous suspense thrillers. When famed actress Olivia Hayden ends up in intensive care after a car accident, her nurse, Kemp McAvoy, seizes the opportunity to exploit the comatose star for his own personal gain. But while he's playing “angel” to the infirm celebrity, his girlfriend's daughter, Leah Pelton, claims she truly does see divine spirits. As the novel intensifies, the manipulation of one manufactured mystery becomes mired in criminal missteps; meanwhile, the other, possibly hallucinatory one, proves more difficult to refute... Fans of his previous books may find it refreshing to read this author's fast-paced novel set not in the South but in the greedy world of Hollywood.

Publishers Weekly, May 2010

One of the many good reasons to read a Tim Downs novel is how creative his character development unfolds throughout the story.  In the case of Wonders Never Cease, there is a tension that builds between the characters that keeps you reading to the next chapter and beyond – it’s a story you can’t put down, the mark of truly good writing.

Note to self…next time I start a Tim Downs book, plan to read during the day instead of before going to sleep! I found the characters likeable, the plot interesting and the ending very satisfying! There were definitely some twists I hadn’t expected... Just like life, it doesn’t all get tied up in a nice little bow at the end.

Wonders Never Cease is a thoroughly satisfying novel, a tightly crafted story that delivers a nice balance of drama, suspense and humor. The characters are clearly rendered, real people who struggle with day to day morality in the modern world at a big city hospital. But the book is never preachy, just a fun read that challenged me to think about what I would do in similar circumstances. And it also reminded me that what is going on in the spiritual world is a close and present reality.

Some of the one-liners are hysterical and if I am reading in public, well, I wind up looking nuts! But since laughter is good for one's health, I keep coming back for more. Thank you for giving me the great pleasure of laughing out loud!

I absolutely loved the humor, and had numerous laugh-out-loud moments when I was reading it. I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happened, and when I did, I was very pleased. It kept me guessing to the end.

As always, the characterization was rich; it is especially delightful how the sparkling humor develops even the background persons. There in nothing flat or stock about these people! Indeed, it must be difficult to so thoroughly develop such unsavory characters. I know actors prefer to play “bad guys” because it allows them more depth, but few authors can so well plumb the depths of normative depravity. Yet you manage it without ever seeming dark, overbearing, or gloomy. In fact, the characters in Wonders serve as an especially enchanting backdrop to the redemption of the heroes.
